83% of respondents to the online questionnaire have smart devices in the home and the same number rate them as very useful. The majority (62%) have had such devices for only 1-2 years, every fourth person 3-4 years, and only 13% have owned such devices for more than 4 years. Smart devices are primarily purchased for convenience (38%), 17% for entertainment, 14% for energy saving reasons, and 19% look on tinkering with smart devices as a hobby.
Participants in the INNObyte survey primarily (68%) use smart devices at home in relation to entertainment electronics and media centre. Two-thirds (60%) use smart lighting, while 45% have a smart thermostat. One-third of respondents have installed smart heating, and the same proportion have some sort of smart cleaning device. 28% entrust property protection to some kind of smart monitoring system.
93% of respondents see benefits in the use of smart devices in the home: the majority (82%) believe they are convenient and make life simpler. 54% have achieved energy savings through their use, and 49% have saved time. 50% look on them as entertainment and 35% view them as a hobby. 25% have made financial savings with the procurement of smart devices.
Among those who do not have smart devices (15%), reasons for not acquiring them are on the one hand for security, and on the other hand financial reasons. A third of respondents view these devices in the home as a threat, mainly because of security issues: on the one hand, due to their vulnerability to hacking, for example, cameras, other sensors can be used for surveillance, and on the other hand they do not have faith in the secure storage of data collected by the devices. Most concerns can be traced back to not knowing how specific devices work, so they don’t know what data they are storing about user behaviour and what data they don’t store.
Having reviewed the results of the questionnaire, it is evident that enterprises engaged with AI, including INNObyte Informatikai Zrt., must look on it as a duty to inform people about how smart devices function and their proper use.
